Yanggu County, led by Mayor Seo Heung-won, is rolling out the 2026 Youth Yanggu Gomchwi Festival from May 2 through May 5 at Yanggu Leisure Sports Park.

Yanggu gomchwi thrives in high, pristine mountain areas where cool temperatures and big day‑to‑night swings give the leaf a bold aroma and a silky, tender bite.

More than just a leafy wrap for barbecue, gomchwi has been turned into a range of products — from pickled gomchwi to gomchwi kimchi — making it an ingredient people can enjoy year‑round. To spotlight the exceptional quality of its gomchwi, Yanggu County organized this festival.

Now in its 23rd year, the festival carries the slogan Royal Gomchwi, celebrating the plant as the \”emperor of spring greens.\” Organizers have put together a vibrant lineup of events to give visitors plenty of reasons to celebrate.

This year’s edition aims to be a sustainable, eco‑friendly festival. Organizers are cutting single‑use items and expanding the use of reusable containers to promote greener festival habits. By offering a stay‑oriented, eco‑focused experience that highlights local charm, the county hopes to boost tourism.

Last year, Yanggu set attendance records across its three signature events — the Gomchwi Festival, the Bellybutton Festival, and the Siraegi Apple Festival. Roughly 100,000 visitors attended, and all 8,500 boxes of prepared gomchwi (8.5 tons) sold out.

Organizers expect to build on that success this year with an even richer program of activities.

First up, there will be a variety of hands‑on experiences for kids and families. The \”Catch! Tinyping\” pop‑up playground offers a kids’ zone that blends arcade games, activities, and DIY projects. In the Kids Adventure Zone, a traveling petting zoo, inflatable bounce attractions, and a gomchwi kit‑making station will run continuously so children can jump in anytime.

On May 2, the festival will host a Mini Force sing‑along show, and on Children’s Day (May 5) it will feature the Catch! Tinyping sing‑along show along with a family song festival titled \”Gomirang: Play! Sing! Enjoy!\” — all designed to create special memories for visiting families.

The festival will also spotlight gomchwi in its food and culinary workshops. Visitors can roll up their sleeves to make gomchwi pesto pizza and gomchwi ice cream, try rice‑cake pounding with gomchwi, and sample gomchwi wraps — a lineup meant to delight every sense.

Premium gomchwi makgeolli will be on sale as well, giving visitors a unique local tasting experience.

The evenings will come alive with a diverse concert lineup.

On opening night, May 2, MBC Radio will stage a live broadcast featuring Choi Suho and Kim Dabi. May 3 brings the Youth Yanggu Concert with DJ DOC and Park Da‑hye, and May 4 offers the Royal Gomchwi Concert with Jang Yoon‑jung and Kim Hong‑nam.

On May 5, a special family concert for Children’s Day — focused on children’s songs — will feature Oksang Dalbit and ramp up the festival’s festive energy. The county will also operate a reservation‑only \”Royal Healing Zone\” where visitors can unwind in the natural surroundings.
