International trips are fun, but spending a whole day just getting there feels wasteful in this heat. If you want to get the most out of a short break, a domestic getaway is often the smartest move.

For summer 2026, we’ve handpicked destinations where you can enjoy exotic, refreshing vibes without traveling far.

Gangneung, Gangwon Province

Gangneung has consistently ranked among Korea’s top summer destinations. It’s about a two-hour KTX ride from Seoul, and the clean air and coastal breeze feel instantly refreshing when you arrive.

Beyond Gyeongpo and Anmok beaches, a short walk or drive will lead you to quieter shores like Jumunjin and Sacheonjin. The cafe strip along Anmok Beach—lined with seaside coffee shops—has become a must-visit spot for sipping a drink to the sound of waves.

If you want more than just beaches, plan a half-day drive to Sogeumgang Gorge or Ojukheon. Lodging ranges from cozy seaside pensions to city hotels at reasonable prices. Summer weekends fill up fast, so book rooms and parking at least 3–4 weeks ahead.

Busan

Summer still equals Busan for many people. It’s one of the few places where big-city convenience and beach life coexist seamlessly. With KTX or SRT, most travelers can get here within four hours, which makes it an easy, irresistible summer pick.

Haeundae is the ultimate beach, and the Gwangandaegyo Bridge is famously romantic. Lately, spots like Gwangalli Waterfront Park and Yeongdo have been getting buzz for their chilled, photogenic vibes. Spend your day cooling off in the water and your evening enjoying fresh sashimi and soju with the bridge lit up behind you—it’s hard to beat a summer night in Busan.

Taean, South Chungcheong Province

If you’re traveling with kids or older family members, Taean is an excellent choice. The West Coast Expressway makes it easy to reach from the Seoul area, and the calm waves make swimming safe and relaxing. The sunset beyond the Halmi and Harabi rocks at Ggotji Beach is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular views in the country.

Taean’s big draw is its mudflats—world-class tidal flats where clamming at low tide gives you a hands-on nature experience that’s fun for all ages. Nearby Sinduri coastal dunes offer otherworldly scenery that’s perfect for photos.

With a national park, pensions, and plenty of campgrounds, Taean is ideal for families looking for an affordable, intimate escape. Could there be a better spot for a summer retreat?

Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang Province

Known as the “Naples of the East,” Tongyeong has a charm that outshines other cities of similar size. As a port town bordering Hallyeohaesang National Park, islands, sea, and mountains combine to create postcard-perfect views from nearly every angle.

Take the cable car up to the Mireuksan lookout for a sweeping panorama of the Hallyeo Islands. Tongyeong is reachable from Seoul in about 3–4 hours by intercity bus or by KTX plus a regional bus transfer—pair it with Geoje for a jam-packed 2-night, 3-day trip.

Seogwipo, Jeju

Flying there is a trade-off, but for an unmistakably exotic vibe, Seogwipo on Jeju is hard to beat.

Jeju is beloved as a summer destination, and Seogwipo in particular enjoys steadier weather thanks to Hallasan blocking northern winds—its waters often look especially clear. From surfing at Jungmun Beach to the dramatic columnar basalt cliffs and mysterious rock formations, the scenery is even more striking in person.

Pair those sights with the tasty finds at Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market for a fuller vacation. Keep in mind that peak-season flights can be pricier—save by booking early or choosing weekday travel.
