This May—Family Month—slip away to Sageunjin Beach in Gangneung for a slow, soothing seaside escape.

As part of its 2026–2027 “Visit Gangneung Year” campaign, the city has made May’s theme “Slow Travel by the Quiet Sea” and chosen the Sageunjin Beach Multi-use Plaza as the featured destination.

The Sageunjin Beach Multi-use Plaza is a calm spot to step away from busy routines, linger by the shoreline, and soak in Gangneung’s distinctive coastal views and relaxed vibe.

At this versatile plaza, you can loosen up with outdoor fitness gear from Sageunjin Gym and catch the beach’s lively energy. Sleek pergolas, benches, and swinging seats offer cozy spots to gaze at the sea and unwind.

When the canola flowers burst into bloom, waves of yellow brighten the spring shoreline. At night, subtle landscape lighting along the beach path makes evening strolls feel downright magical.

From the Sageunjin Undersea Park you get sweeping East Sea views—and a real sense of the quiet, unhurried charm that defines Gangneung’s coast.

Nearby attractions include Sacheonjin Port, Sacheon Beach, Gyeongpo Beach, Gyeongpodae, Gyeongpo Lake, and the Sunpo Wetlands. The Chodang and Sacheon neighborhoods—famous for soft tofu and mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup)—are close by, making this an ideal day-trip that blends serene seascapes with nature, ecology, and foodie discoveries.

In May, local dishes like rockfish seaweed soup, barley rice, and seafood pajeon—made with fresh regional ingredients—perfectly extend the slow-travel feeling.

With Children’s Day and Buddha’s Birthday falling in May, a variety of events and attractions are planned, giving visitors even more reasons to experience something special in Gangneung.

Eom Geum-mun, head of Gangneung’s Tourism Policy Division, said, “May in Gangneung is a time when the value of rest and leisure shines brighter than spectacle. We hope visitors will enjoy Gangneung’s slow travel while gazing at the quiet sea.”
