Sure, it might feel early—it’s not even May—but savvy travelers are already mapping out Japan itineraries for October. Snagging flights and hotels ahead of the crowd is the easiest way to cut travel costs.

October’s weather is perfectly temperate—not too hot, not too cold—so it’s one of the best times to go. And if you’re only thinking Tokyo, Osaka, or Fukuoka, you’re missing out. Here are picks that deserve a spot on your October Japan list.

Daisetsuzan, Hokkaido

If you want to see autumn earlier than most of Japan, head to Daisetsuzan National Park in Hokkaido—the first place in the country where the leaves start to turn. From late September into early October, the mountains blaze with color. Take the ropeway for an easy, jaw-dropping panorama that’s pure autumn vibes.

October in Hokkaido has a hint of early winter in the air, so the breeze feels refreshingly cool. Sightseeing in Otaru or around Sapporo is comfortably crisp—no sweaty city walks—making it a fantastic October destination.

Aomori — Oirase

Aomori in the Tohoku region is another perfect October pick. Oirase Gorge becomes a tunnel of golden foliage from mid to late October, and the spectacle draws visitors from around the world—trust us, it’s worth the trip.

Aomori is apple country. Desserts made from freshly harvested apples add a delicious bonus to your travels. Instead of the now-familiar cities—Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Kyoto—consider a quieter, more rural slice of Japan for your October escape.

Kanazawa, Ishikawa

Kyoto is classic for a reason, but it’s often overflowing with tourists. For a more intimate experience, try Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture. Because it largely escaped World War II bombing, many Edo-period streets remain intact—so it’s earned the nickname “Little Kyoto.”

Kenrokuen, one of Japan’s three great gardens, lights up with brilliant fall colors in October. You’ll also spot the start of yukitsuri—the straw-and-rope tree supports used to protect branches from heavy winter snow—which gives the autumn scenery a distinct, photogenic quality.

Don’t skip the gold-leaf ice cream in the Higashi Chaya district, where Kanazawa’s famed gilding traditions shine, or fresh seasonal seafood at Omicho Market once October begins. With Shinkansen access from Tokyo, Kanazawa pairs small-town charm with big-city convenience—few October destinations feel this elegant.

Kamikochi, Nagano

Nagano is home to mountains that rival the European Alps—Kamikochi in the Japanese Alps sits around 1,500 meters above sea level and is painted in full autumn color by October.

The Azusa River is impossibly clear, mirroring the dramatic ridgeline of the Takesawa peaks like a postcard. To protect the environment, private cars are restricted here, so you’ll trek in peaceful silence, surrounded by nature. If you plan to hike, pack windproof, insulated layers—high-altitude conditions can get seriously cold.

All four destinations we’ve highlighted hit their stride in October. Ditch the typical big-city itinerary and dive deeper into Japan’s autumn. Book ahead and you’ll enjoy a smoother, more relaxed—and more budget-friendly—trip.
