[MyDaily = Reporter Lee Ji-hye] Hong Kong’s iconic dragon boat races are set to return to Victoria Harbor for the main events on June 27–28.

Traditionally held around the Duanwu Festival (the lunar calendar’s fifth day of the fifth month—this year on June 19), dragon boat races pop up across Hong Kong at spots like Stanley, Aberdeen, Sai Kung and along the Shing Mun River in Sha Tin. Dozens of paddlers power their boats in sync with pounding drums while ornate dragon heads crown the prows.

This year’s main races will feature about 220 teams from 16 regions, including South Korea.

On the 19th, the Hong Kong Tourism Board announced a 13-day celebration from June 19 through July 1 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival. The program includes traditional cultural activities, a VR dragon boat experience and live performances along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, including the Avenue of Stars and Salisbury Garden.

The festival will also feature a Dragon Boat food lane and a beer garden. Visitors can enjoy complimentary beer and traditional Duanwu rice dumplings, zongzi (粽子).

A Hong Kong Tourism Board spokesperson said the event aims to introduce traditional dragon boat culture to younger generations and to showcase a uniquely Hong Kong festival vibe where tradition meets modern flair.
