When the heat starts to set in, many of us begin dreaming of a cool getaway. Japan often gets a reputation for being hotter than Korea, but that’s a bit misleading. Because the country stretches far north to south and has many highland areas, you can find surprisingly fresh, breezy summer escapes that feel worlds away from sticky city heat.

Here are five dreamy Japanese summer retreats you can enjoy in a short three-night, four-day trip.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido is the poster child for a cool Japanese summer. Sitting at the country’s northern tip, summer temperatures often hover around 25°C (77°F), and low humidity makes shaded spots feel wonderfully refreshing. For a 3-night, 4-day jaunt, make Sapporo your base and plan day trips to Furano and Biei.

In July, endless lavender fields paint the landscape in purple—you might do a double-take and think you’re in Provence. Drive or stroll along Biei’s scenic “patchwork road” and let cool breezes reset your senses.

After a day of sightseeing, head to Odori Park for the lively beer festival and toast the evening with an ice-cold draft. Nights in Hokkaido are blissfully cool—perfect for wandering without the sticky summer heat.

Kamikochi (Nagano)

Nestled at around 1,500 meters, Kamikochi is a jewel of the Japanese Alps. To protect its pristine environment, private cars are restricted, which helps keep the air crisp and clean—think the refreshing chill of opening a refrigerator, but in nature.

The view of the Hotaka range from the iconic Kappa Bridge is utterly dramatic. Trails along the Azusa River are mostly flat and well-maintained, so you don’t need to be a hardcore hiker to enjoy them.

It’s easy to reach on a 3-night, 4-day trip via Tokyo or Nagoya. Stay at a forest resort and let the morning mist and mountain air melt the summer heat away.

Karuizawa

Just an hour from Tokyo on the shinkansen, Karuizawa has long been a dreamy escape for locals and creatives alike. Perched at about 1,000 meters, this highland town was a favorite summer refuge of the imperial family and famous writers.

Legend has it John Lennon enjoyed summers here. The best way to experience Karuizawa? Rent a bike and glide beneath leafy canopies, stopping at charming boutiques and cafés along the way.

Pause at a hidden, vibe-filled café for a fragrant cup of coffee—perfect for cooling down and people-watching.

Aomori

At the northern edge of Honshu, Aomori Prefecture is home to the Oirase Stream—often called one of Japan’s most beautiful gorges. The roughly 14-kilometer trail winds through ancient forest and past dozens of waterfalls, offering natural air-conditioning and peaceful walks.

Because the path runs alongside a road, you can pick a stretch that fits your energy level. Strolling past emerald moss, rushing water, and cool cascades feels deeply cleansing.

Aomori stays refreshingly cool even in summer—bring a light long-sleeve for evenings. If you want to escape city crowds and tune into nature, this is a top pick.

Mount Aso (Kumamoto)

Though Kyushu is often thought of as hot, the highland areas around Mount Aso are pleasantly cool. Aso sits inside one of the world’s largest calderas, and its elevation keeps temperatures noticeably lower than the cities.

The vast Kusasenri grasslands ripple in green waves and welcome refreshing winds—ideal for picnics or lazy walks. Driving up toward the summit reveals dramatic views of an active volcano that will leave you awestruck.

Spend your days breathing fresh highland air and your evenings soaking in an open-air bath at nearby Kurokawa Onsen—cool night air and steaming water make for an unforgettable summer moment. For a rewarding 3-night, 4-day trip, fly into Fukuoka and rent a car to explore at your own pace.
