South Jeolla Province (Jeollanam-do) is rolling out meditation-focused tourism centered on its 1,000-year-old temples as it goes after the growing healing and wellness travel market.

On the 20th, provincial officials announced five sites selected for the Jeonnam Millennium Temple Global Meditation Tourism Project: Yongheungsa, Neunggasa, Cheongwansa, Baekyangsa and Sinheungsa.

The initiative pairs each temple’s traditional cultural assets with curated meditation programming to offer domestic and international visitors a chance to rest, reset and heal.

Each temple will feature specialized offerings. Yongheungsa will run a Seon Meditation temple stay focused on tea meditation, walking meditations and informal tea conversations with monks. Neunggasa will introduce singing-bowl sound therapy and beach meditation. Cheongwansa will host a Mind Retreat that includes meditative walks through camellia forests. Baekyangsa plans programs centered on the tea ceremony, breathwork and mindful temple cuisine. Sinheungsa will provide hands-on experiences combining seated and walking meditation with marine-based healing.

The programs will also link to local festivals to encourage longer stays and boost the regional economy. Yongheungsa will coordinate with the Damyang Bamboo Festival, Neunggasa with the Goheung yuja (yuzu) Festival, and Baekyangsa with the Aegi Maple Festival, among others.

Jeonnam will provide 25 million KRW (approximately $18,750) per temple to renovate meditation spaces, develop programming, and support promotion and marketing.

“Jeonnam’s millennium temples are ideal places for healing the weary body and mind,” said Choi Young-joo, director of Jeonnam’s Tourism and Sports Bureau. “Through continuous development and support, we aim to nurture them into world-class meditation and healing destinations.”
