As foreign visitors flood into Busan, officials are rolling out an on-site inspection at Busan Station. Tourism insiders warn that rudeness and price gouging could drive visitors away if those issues follow the surge.

On the morning of the 13th, the Busan Tourism Organization and the Busan City Tourism Association announced a capacity-assessment and hospitality campaign to be held in the plaza outside Busan Station. About 100 people — including representatives from related organizations and local residents — are expected to take part.

The campaign is aimed at testing frontline response and creating a more welcoming atmosphere in response to the recent uptick in foreign visitors.

Last year, Busan welcomed 3.64 million foreign visitors. By March of this year, the number had already topped 1 million. Local tourism businesses say the pace of growth is much faster than in past years.

Participants will tour the Busan Station area to evaluate tourist information systems and pedestrian conditions. They’ll also run initiatives promoting friendly service, clear price displays, and a safer environment for visitors.

Organizers stress that the first impression at Busan Station can ultimately shape the city’s overall image.

Busan City has designated the period through June for special inspections and is continuing joint checks on accommodation overcharging and other tourist inconveniences.

A Busan Tourism Organization official said, “We will step up on-site service checks and tighten management of the tourism environment to match the increase in visitors. We’re committed to building an image of Busan that makes people want to return.”
