Chelsea’s Transfer Violation: How £10.75 Million Fine Impacts Their Champions League Chances

[Sports Today reporter Kang Tae-gu] Chelsea has been fined after the club paid undisclosed funds to unregistered agents and third parties during player transfers.

The English Premier League (EPL) announced on the 17th (Korean time) that it has opened disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea over breaches related to financial reporting and third‑party investment.

Investigators found that between 2011 and 2018 Chelsea paid undisclosed sums to unregistered agents and other third parties during the player recruitment process.

The league said Chelsea broke the rules it is required to follow and has been hit with a £10,750,000 fine (about ₩21.3 billion / roughly $14,271,000). The club will also face a one‑year ban on first‑team transfers and a nine‑month ban on academy transfers.

Fortunately for the club, there was no points deduction. Chelsea have 13 wins, nine draws and eight losses (48 points) and remain in a tight race for a Champions League spot with fourth‑place Aston Villa (51 points) and fifth‑place Liverpool (49 points).

Had points been deducted, Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League would likely have been ended.

The league said Chelsea’s proactive self‑reporting, acceptance of the breaches and full cooperation throughout the investigation were significant mitigating factors.
