SSG Landers pitcher Kim Kwang-hyun (38) underwent successful shoulder surgery and vowed to return to the mound.

SSG announced on March 27 that Kim had the operation at a hospital in Nagoya, Japan, and that it was completed without complications.

Kim will spend about a month in Japan recovering and undergoing rehabilitation. The club expects it will take at least six months before he can return to play, and depending on how rehab goes he could miss the entire season.

Through the team, Kim thanked fans for their support and said the first thing he wanted to tell everyone when he woke from anesthesia was, “I’m okay.”

He added that he’ll be cheering for the team while focusing exclusively on rehab, and he promised to come back healthy so they can see him on the mound again.

Kim returned home on the 15th of last month from the club’s first spring camp in Vero Beach, Florida, after experiencing shoulder pain.

After detailed testing revealed a left posterior shoulder bone spur, Kim traveled to Japan for a specialized rehab program but ultimately opted for surgery.

A clubhouse leader and one of SSG’s cornerstones, Kim was the SK Wyverns’ (now SSG) first-round pick in 2007. Aside from two seasons in Major League Baseball (2020–2021), he has appeared in 415 KBO games, posting a 180–108 record with two holds, 2,020 strikeouts and a 3.43 ERA.

Last season he appeared in 28 games, logged the required 144 innings to qualify, and finished 10–10 with 138 strikeouts and a 5.00 ERA.
