Election authorities reported a preliminary total of 45 candidates for education superintendent across 16 provinces and cities as of 9 p.m. on May 14, the first day of registration for the June 3 local elections. The National Election Commission said 10 incumbent superintendents — including those from Seoul, the Jeonnam–Gwangju integrated special city, Busan, Daegu, North Chungcheong, North Gyeongsang and Jeju — filed to run for re-election. In Daejeon, five candidates completed their registration on the first day. The candidates’ average age is 64.7 years. Ten have criminal records, and six have had outstanding debts or unpaid obligations recorded in the past five years. Among the candidates, Kang Eun‑hee, who is running in the Daegu superintendent race, reported the largest declared assets at about 28.175 billion KRW (approximately $21,131,250).
