[By Kang Tae-gu | Sports Today] The expected major-league call-up for Go Woo-seok (Detroit Tigers) was nixed on Friday.

MLB.com reported on May 29 (KST) that the Tigers placed veteran closer Kenley Jansen on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his pelvis.

Rather than promoting Go, Detroit selected left-hander Drew Somers to fill Jansen’s spot.

Somers had been the 27th-man call-up for the May 25 game against the Baltimore Orioles, was optioned back to the minors, then returned immediately under the injured-player replacement rule.

The decision came down to 40-man roster logistics.

Somers is already on Detroit’s 40-man roster, making it straightforward to add him to the active 26-man roster. Go is not on the 40-man, and the Tigers were not able to clear a 40-man spot to promote him.

This season, Go has appeared in 16 minor-league games, going 2-1 with a 1.38 ERA.

He fractured the index finger on his right hand during spring camp, rehabbed and then raised expectations by pitching well for South Korea in the March World Baseball Classic (WBC).

After the WBC, however, Go struggled in Triple-A — two outings produced a 20.25 ERA and a loss, and he was demoted to Double-A.

His former KBO club, the LG Twins, explored bringing him back after closer Yoo Young-chan’s injury, but Go declined the offer.

That choice drew criticism, yet Go remained confident. He responded with a dominant stretch in Double-A, posting a 0.66 ERA over eight appearances and earning a promotion back to Triple-A on May 9.

He continued to pitch well at Triple-A and pushed for a big-league call, but this time the majors stayed out of reach.
