Samsung Shares Surge 8% as Massive Strike Threat Looms

From tomorrow through the 27th, union members will vote on the tentative agreement; divisions within the union make the outcome especially significant. ■KOSPI reclaims the 7,800 level in a single-day surge… Samsung shares leap■ With fears of a company-wide Samsung strike eased, South Korea’s main stock index, the KOSPI, jumped more than 8% in a single day and quickly retook the 7,800 level. Samsung Electronics shares rose by more than 8%. ■Oil price cap frozen again… adjustment interval extended from 2 weeks to 4 weeks■ The government has frozen the sixth oil price cap, which takes effect tomorrow, for another cycle. Unlike the previous practice of applying a set cap for two weeks, the sixth cap will be applied in four-week intervals. ■“Tattooing by non-medical personnel is not unlicensed medical practice”■ The Supreme Court overturned a 34-year-old precedent that had treated tattooing as an ‘unlicensed medical practice’ subject to punishment. With a law set to allow non-medical tattooing starting next October, the change in precedent should reduce confusion. ■Official campaigning begins… party leaders target central regions■ Official campaigning for the June 3 local elections began today. Democratic Party leader Jeong Cheong-rae crisscrossed Seoul, Gyeonggi and the Chungcheong region to stump for candidates, while People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk visited Chungcheong to emphasize holding the ruling administration accountable.
