South Korea’s largest fashion platform, Musinsa, has finalized a firm response to allegations that some sellers have been swapping product labels. Label swapping — replacing labels on Dongdaemun wholesale buys or other companies’ finished goods to pass them off as in-house products — became a hot topic on online communities after users pointed out items that looked identical to wholesale-market pieces. In response, Musinsa launched a full review and asked sellers to provide explanations under its safe-trade policy.

The move signals Musinsa’s determination to root out deceptive practices that erode platform trust. The company warned it will impose the strictest penalties, including terminating storefront contracts for brands found to violate internal rules. Under a zero-tolerance policy, offending brands could be permanently barred from Musinsa and sister platforms like 29CM. When consumer harm is significant or cases are especially serious, Musinsa said it will not hesitate to pursue criminal charges.

Although Musinsa legally operates as an intermediary marketplace, the company will build an active monitoring system. Current law does not force intermediaries to pre-inspect manufacturers’ processes or details, but Musinsa is voluntarily strengthening oversight to protect customers who trust the platform. As a technical measure, it plans to roll out an online verification system next month.

The system will use artificial intelligence to compare more than 1,200,000 product listings on the platform in real time. It analyzes designs, silhouettes, and fine details to detect similarities with other brands’ or wholesale items. When the AI flags a high similarity, a dedicated monitoring team immediately opens a detailed investigation. The team will request production records and cost documentation from the seller to verify whether the item was self-produced. By combining technical filters with human review, Musinsa aims to stop label-swapped items at the source.

Industry insiders say Musinsa’s move could help address a long-standing problem in the domestic fashion market. Some emerging brands have been putting logos on Dongdaemun-sourced pieces and selling them at high prices for quick profit. That practice undermines honest designers and lowers overall market quality. To prevent unqualified sellers from entering the platform, Musinsa will strengthen manufacturing-capability checks during the storefront screening process.

Musinsa also clarified its customer-compensation policy. If a product is confirmed to be label-swapped and a buyer is harmed, Musinsa will refund the full purchase price and provide additional compensation to make good on lost trust. The company acknowledged that rapid platform growth can create blind spots, but it pledged to invest in technology and resources to ensure transparent transactions. Creating a level playing field without cheating, Musinsa argues, is the best way to protect the competitiveness of the Korean fashion industry.

A Musinsa spokesperson said the company must take responsibility beyond the usual limits of an intermediary platform and will concentrate companywide resources on supporting honest partner brands so they can grow and earn fair returns. The spokesperson acknowledged these measures could temporarily reduce the number of storefront brands or hit sales, but stressed that protecting the platform’s core — trust — is the top long-term priority.
