Cosmax just proved its R&D bona fides after a global beauty expo jury singled out its formulation technology. Industry watchers say the award is clear evidence that K‑Beauty formulation expertise is holding its own on the world stage. The company plans to leverage those innovations to push global expansion and sustain growth.

On March 30, Cosmax announced it had won the top prize in the skincare category at Cosmoprof Bologna 2026 in Italy. At the show, Cosmax stood out as the only cosmetics ODM to reach the finals in three categories — skincare, haircare and sustainability — underscoring its technical leadership.

The centerpiece of the win was Cosmax’s \”1000‑trillion moisturizer\” technology. The approach pairs a proprietary bio‑conversion process derived from the skin microbiome with high‑pressure homogenization to create a nano‑emulsion that densely disperses ultra‑fine particles. The result: rich hydration without heaviness — a combination premium skincare consumers expect. Judges noted improvements in both moisture retention and skin absorption efficiency.

Cosmax is also boosting its global R&D and manufacturing muscle through collaboration with Cheminova, the Italian ODM it recently acquired. That acquisition does more than extend partnerships — it establishes a research and production foothold in Europe. By combining local European know‑how and networks with its own capabilities, Cosmax aims to sharpen product competitiveness.

The award also reflects steady returns on Cosmax’s sustained R&D investments. Last September, the company won a main prize from the International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) — the first time a Korean firm received that honor — for research clarifying the mechanism behind premature graying. The recognition highlights Cosmax’s strength in both formulation engineering and foundational science.

Cosmax is shifting toward an R&D‑led business model: roughly 30% of its workforce is focused on research and development. Centered at the Pangyo Research & Innovation (R&I) Center, the company runs specialized teams across skincare, haircare and other categories to conduct in‑depth, segmented research. Analysts see this as a strategic move away from a production‑centric ODM model toward a technology‑driven company. Cosmax’s R&D spend last year reached KRW 136.7 billion (≈ $102.5M), up 31.4% from KRW 104.1 billion (≈ $78.1M) the year before, and R&D’s share of sales expanded from 4.8% to 5.7% over the same period.

Cosmax has also built a global collaboration network, conducting joint research with local labs at its overseas subsidiaries in China, the U.S. and Southeast Asia to develop products tailored to regional preferences. Parent company Cosmax BTI handles core technology and novel material development, supporting group‑level R&D synergies.

Those investments are translating into financial gains. Last year, Cosmax posted KRW 2.3988 trillion (≈ $1.80B) in sales and KRW 195.8 billion (≈ $146.9M) in operating profit, rises of 10.7% and 11.6% year‑over‑year, respectively. Market watchers say expanded R&D spending and global partnerships are key drivers of that momentum. Financial data provider FnGuide projects Cosmax will record KRW 2.7103 trillion (≈ $2.03B) in sales and KRW 233.5 billion (≈ $175.1M) in operating profit this year.

Lee Byung‑ju, vice chairman and CEO of Cosmax BTI, said, \”This award recognizes the leading formulation technology Cosmax has built up over time on the global stage. We will continue to introduce distinctive premium formulation solutions to strengthen our position in international markets.\”
