The Dongne Bookne cafés in Daejeon’s Dong‑gu posted a 91% user satisfaction rate, signaling their success as neighborhood reading spaces that serve multiple generations.

The district said it surveyed visitors at six locations and found a 91% satisfaction rate. Conducted both online and offline, the survey drew 371 responses. The largest age group was people in their 40s (23%); children 10 and under made up 18%, and adults 60 and older accounted for 20%, indicating broad, multigenerational use.

Satisfaction across specific categories was also strong: overall satisfaction 91%; facilities 93%; cultural programs 98%; specialized collections 77%; and ease of access 83%.

Respondents most often cited the café‑like atmosphere (62%) as the book cafés’ chief strength, followed by geographic accessibility (22%).

The network expanded to six locations: Hongdo opened in 2023; Yongun, Daedong, Hyodong and Gayang 1‑dong opened in 2024; and Sannae opened this year. Each site features a specialized theme—cooking and crafts; health and golf; board games and picture books; parenting education; and comics and sports.

The district plans to use the survey findings to guide operational improvements and inform policy. Shinindong (No. 7) and Gayang 2‑dong (No. 8) will open in phases as officials expand the area’s reading and cultural infrastructure.

Park Hee‑jo, the district director, said, “The book cafés have become more than reading spaces; they have emerged as community cultural hubs where residents learn and connect. We will actively incorporate residents’ feedback to develop these centers into accessible reading-and-culture hubs for all generations.”
