Twenty years after his debut, Heo Kyung-hwan appears to be entering a new peak in his career — and a special, laughter-packed reunion with comedy legends spotlights that moment.
On the March 15 episode of SBS’s My Ugly Duckling, Heo sits down with veteran comedians Lee Seong-mi, Kim Su-yong, Jo Hye-ryeon and Shin Bong-sun. From the moment they meet him, the veterans tease him mercilessly — “You’ve been really hyped lately,” and “You’re not the same as before” — putting Heo comically on the spot.
They reveal they’ve organized what they call the “Heo Kyung-hwan Excitement Prevention Committee” to keep him grounded, a joke that had the room in stitches. Shin even quipped that Heo’s catchphrase borders on a form of national gaslighting, then kicked off an impromptu catchphrase showdown with Heo and Jo that left the studio roaring.
True to their reputations, the group also shared the secrets behind their longevity. From Jo’s Taebo-era fame to Lee’s sharp-tongued talk style and Shin’s reputation as a comeback success, each reflected on what’s sustained their careers. Kim Su-yong — recently framed in the media as a comeback icon — recounted a terrifying episode late last year when he suddenly collapsed from an acute myocardial infarction, underwent emergency surgery and later woke up. He described waking to a chaotic scene and the shock of that moment, leaving viewers anxious to learn more.
After finishing a separate schedule, Yoo Min-sang joined the gathering late, and an unexpected, rosy chemistry between him and Shin Bong-sun quickly grabbed everyone’s attention. The pair had previously selected each other on a dating segment for Shin’s YouTube channel, a pairing that even sparked marriage rumors at one point. According to on-set reports, Yoo then dropped a jaw-dropping remark that stunned everyone present.
What did Yoo say? Tune in to see the laughter-filled reunion and find out tonight (March 15) at 9 p.m. KST on SBS’s My Ugly Duckling.
