South Korea’s national baking team has once again proven the prowess of K-bakery by clinching the top spot at the “Baking World Cup” in Paris, France. This victory, their first in eight years since 2016, is especially sweet as it comes from triumphing over France, the birthplace of bread-making.

Industry insiders and international media reported on the 10th that the South Korean national baking team snagged the overall championship at the Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie (World Baking Cup) in Paris on January 21 (local time). This prestigious biennial competition has been the pinnacle of baking excellence since its inception in 1992.

This year’s competition theme was “The Great Inventions of Our Country.” The Korean team wowed the judges with a show-stopping bread sculpture inspired by the turtle ship, an iconic warship from the Joseon Dynasty.

The breathtaking creation, measuring 1 meter in width and length and standing 1.4 meters tall, featured meticulously crafted scales, sails, and a fierce dragon head – all entirely edible! The team ingeniously incorporated elements of Hangul and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, seamlessly weaving Korea’s rich history and culture into their delicious masterpiece.

The judges were particularly impressed by the team’s clever use of uniquely Korean ingredients like ssanghwa-tang (a traditional herbal tea), rice flour, and turmeric powder, which added an authentic touch to their creation. The Korean team’s exceptional skill and creativity throughout the entire process earned them top marks. Taiwan and France followed in second and third place, respectively.

The competition isn’t just about sculpting bread, though. Contestants had to whip up over 20 different baked goods, including perfectly crusty baguettes, buttery brioches, flaky croissants, and mouthwatering sandwiches – all within a tight time limit. Judges evaluated not only taste and presentation but also the baking process and teamwork.

So, what’s the secret behind Korea’s sweet victory? Intense training, of course! The team dedicated six months to rigorous practice, working six days a week in conditions that mimicked the actual competition. They even tackled challenges like adjusting their recipes to account for differences in French water quality – talk about attention to detail!

This triumph reaffirms South Korea’s position at the forefront of global baking innovation and skill. Industry experts are hailing this achievement as a defining moment for K-bakery, showcasing its world-class potential and setting the stage for even more delicious innovations to come.
