Chef Ahn Seong-jae’s fine-dining restaurant, Mosu Seoul (hereafter Mosu), is at the center of a “wine swap” controversy. Mosu has apologized and said it will review all aspects of its service and take steps to prevent a recurrence. On the 23rd, Mosu posted on its official social channels: “We sincerely apologize for failing to provide accurate guidance during the wine-pairing service, which caused confusion, and for not offering a sufficient explanation afterward, which led to great disappointment.” The statement added, “Chef Ahn Seong-jae and the entire Mosu team take this matter very seriously. We will not offer a perfunctory apology; we will work sincerely to rebuild trust with our customers.” The controversy erupted on the 21st after a diner posted on an online community claiming they were served the wrong wine at Mosu. The poster said they used Mosu’s wine-pairing service on the 18th, which pairs a different wine with each course. When the Korean beef course arrived, staff brought a bottle of Château Léoville Barton Saint-Julien 2005, even though the menu listed the Château Léoville Barton Saint-Julien 2000 vintage. The 2005 vintage is about ₩100,000 (approximately $75) cheaper per bottle than the 2000. When the customer raised the issue, staff reportedly offered no formal apology and instead said, “Then we’ll let you taste the 2000 vintage as well.” The poster questioned whether a mistake like this is acceptable at a two-Michelin-star restaurant and criticized the lack of apology and the tone of the response. Mosu Seoul first opened in 2017. In 2023 it was the country’s only three-Michelin-star restaurant but closed amid a relocation. The restaurant reopened in March last year and, a year later, was awarded two stars in the Michelin Guide. Dinner runs about ₩420,000 per person (about $315). #MosuSeoul #AhnSeongjae #Wine Yonhap News TV — For inquiries or tips: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23. Lee Jun-heum (humi@yna.co.kr)
