[Sports Today reporter Jeong Ye-won] Director Jang Hang-jun and actor Yoo Hae-jin — whose film The Man Who Lives with the King has now drawn more than 13 million moviegoers — are set to appear on MBC’s Son Seok-hee’s Questions. The episode airs at 9 p.m. on the 18th, the night after they held a thank-you stage greeting for the film’s success.
Since opening on the 4th of last month, the film has, in under six weeks, become a cultural phenomenon. Viewers have responded both to the historical tragedy of Danjong and to the resonant personal narratives Jang and Yoo bring to the project — elements that helped fuel the picture’s unexpected box-office surge. Jang, who had weathered a string of setbacks, reunited with Yoo — a low-key performer who has appeared in four films that surpassed 10 million admissions — to revive Danjong’s ill-fated story and recast it as a cinematic triumph. That kind of storytelling is something only this film could have achieved.
The pair first worked together on Jang’s debut, Turn On the Lighter, and more than 20 years later reunited to make a movie that has now topped 13 million admissions. The film continues to dominate the box office, and its final tally remains open-ended. After passing the 10 million mark, Jang sat for a string of interviews; host Son Seok-hee admitted he struggled to come up with questions that hadn’t already been asked.
The episode of Son Seok-hee’s Questions featuring the duo will air at 9 p.m. on the 18th.
