Global aviation, defense, and aerospace companies are joining forces in the Cheonsuman area of Taean, positioning it as a key hub for South Korea’s future aviation industry.

Governor Kim Tae-heum signed the agreement alongside Congressman Seong Il-jong, Deputy Director Lee Jeong-seok of the Agency for Defense Development (ADD), and executives from four major companies: Korean Air, LIG Nex1, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), and Hanwha Aerospace.

This partnership aims to establish a strategic base for the future aviation industry, leveraging support infrastructure linked to the Defense Future Aviation Research Center planned for the Cheonsuman B district of Taean. The goal is to foster regional growth and create new economic opportunities.

The signatories agreed to prioritize three key areas: establishing research and business support infrastructure, including the Defense Future Aviation Research Center; facilitating collaboration between government entities and businesses; and securing both public and private investment.

The provincial government will focus on developing a specialized industrial complex, improving local infrastructure, and providing administrative and financial support to attract businesses to the area.

The ADD will expedite the establishment of research facilities and actively support companies looking to set up operations in the region.

Local lawmakers from Seosan and Taean will work to secure federal funding for the research center, industrial complexes, and transportation infrastructure. They will also provide legislative support to streamline regulations and improve relevant laws.

The four participating companies plan to utilize the area near the Defense Future Aviation Research Center as a hub for research, testing, and manufacturing. They will explore investment opportunities to create jobs and enhance the region’s industrial capabilities.

Governor Kim emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “To nurture the future aviation industry, we need major corporations and their partners to form a concentrated industrial complex. We urge companies like Korean Air, LIG Nex1, KAI, and Hanwha Aerospace to invest in Taean.”

The Defense Future Aviation Research Center, slated for completion by 2032, represents a 329.4 billion KRW (247.05 million USD) investment. It will feature a dedicated runway for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research, along with a flight control center and hangar.

Once operational, the ADD plans to consolidate its nationwide UAV research facilities into this comprehensive aviation research and testing center.
