President Lee Jae-myung held a phone call with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on the 10th to discuss expanding cooperation between South Korea and the alliance, according to a written statement from White House spokesperson Kim Nam-jun.

This marks their first conversation in seven months, following an initial call last July, and was initiated at Stoltenberg’s request.

During the call, both leaders acknowledged the increasingly intertwined security landscape of the Indo-Pacific and Europe. They agreed on the necessity of sustained collaboration between South Korea and NATO to address global security challenges. The two also committed to maintaining close communication on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.

President Lee emphasized South Korea’s advanced defense industry capabilities, stating, “South Korea has established itself as a key partner with robust defense cooperation ties to several NATO member states.” He proposed, “Let’s pursue more substantial and practical cooperation through the ‘Korea-NATO Defense Industry Consultative Body’ established last year.”

Secretary General Stoltenberg reciprocated by praising South Korea’s defense capabilities and affirmed, “I will continue to support strengthening our partnership.”

Furthermore, both parties agreed to intensify efforts to deepen the South Korea-NATO relationship across various strategic domains, including defense technology, space exploration, and intelligence sharing.
