U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on March 31 (local time) that “the next few days will be decisive” in the conflict with Iran, warning that Washington would carry out more intense strikes if Tehran refuses to comply.
At the Pentagon during a briefing on the Iran campaign with Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Cain, Hegseth said Iran “knows it has almost nothing it can do militarily.”
Asked about an earlier 4–6 week projection for the campaign, Hegseth said the timeline could be “four weeks, six weeks, eight weeks, or some other number,” and he declined to specify an exact schedule for meeting U.S. objectives.
On the possibility of deploying U.S. ground forces to Iran, he said the option “has not been ruled out.” He added that such a deployment could be carried out if necessary, though it “may not be needed at all.”
