Trump’s Bold Move: U.S. Naval Blockade of Hormuz Strait Amid Iran Nuclear Deal Collapse

President Donald Trump announced that a nuclear agreement with Iran has collapsed and abruptly ordered the U.S. Navy to impose a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. He also warned that the United States would seize foreign-flagged vessels that pay tolls to Iran.

In a statement, Trump said the talks “went smoothly and the parties agreed on most issues, but we failed to reach an agreement on the one critical issue — the nuclear one.” He added that the Navy will “immediately begin procedures to block any vessel attempting to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz.”

Trump said the United States seeks unimpeded freedom of navigation through the strait, but accused Iran of disrupting passage by issuing vague threats about mines. He condemned those actions as “world extortion” and said leaders worldwide, including the United States, will not yield to intimidation.

Along with the blockade, the president announced stepped-up measures to choke off Iran’s funding. He said he ordered the Navy to search and seize any ship in international waters that has paid illegal tolls to Iran, warning that those who pay such tolls “will not be guaranteed safety on the high seas.” He also said U.S. forces will immediately begin operations to destroy mines Iran has allegedly laid in the strait.

Trump delivered an unusually blunt warning about potential Iranian military provocation. “Any Iranian who fires on U.S. forces or peaceful ships will be blown to hell,” he said, adding, “we are locked and loaded,” and that, at the appropriate time, U.S. forces will finish off what remains of Iran.

He went on, “Because of their nuclear ambitions, Iran’s navy and air force, its air defenses and radars have become useless; with Khomeini and much of the leadership dead, the country has collapsed,” and he added that “they know better than anyone how to end this situation.”

Trump said the blockade will begin soon and predicted other countries will join. He warned the United States will not tolerate those who profit from Iran’s illegal efforts to acquire nuclear material and funding.
