Unlocking Strategic Defense: How Korea and Canada Strengthen Military Cooperation in 2026

Translation result. 24일 [Herald Economy=Jeon Hyun-geon] South Korea and Canada are strengthening defense and industrial ties. The relationship has moved beyond straightforward weapons sales to strategic industrial partnerships that bundle technology transfers, workforce training, supply‑chain cooperation and local industry participation.

Industry officials said on April 26 that Michael Wright, commander of the Canadian Army, visited South Korea to attend the 75th anniversary ceremony of the Battle of Gapyeong. During the visit, he said he understands ongoing discussions are underway with South Korean defense firms about Canada’s army modernization program.

“We have presented our requirements and will choose the option that best fits Canada,” Wright said. He added that Ottawa will consider defense‑industrial strategies such as domestic production, partnerships between Canadian and foreign companies, and overseas procurement.

He named specific proposals, including Hanwha Aerospace’s K9 self‑propelled howitzer and the Redback infantry fighting vehicle. “I understand Hanwha proposed the K9, and we also received a proposal for the Redback,” Wright said.

Wright emphasized that a key priority in the army’s modernization is to accelerate the acquisition of new equipment.

Canada views South Korea as a strategic partner because it combines rapid production capacity, proven performance and a willingness to cooperate industrially. Ottawa is particularly focused on replacing aging systems, speeding procurement, reducing dependence on the United States and ensuring benefits flow back to its domestic industry.

While Canada has traditionally maintained strong military ties with the U.S., there is a growing need to diversify procurement. South Korea presents a less politically fraught alternative to the U.S. while offering NATO‑level reliability.

The cooperation scope includes maritime systems: Hanwha Group is pursuing the contract for Canada’s next submarine project.

An industry official said, “Defense cooperation with Canada offers a strategic opportunity that goes beyond exporting platforms like submarines. It can diversify Korea’s security base, upgrade defense and shipbuilding export structures, secure strategic resources and expand diplomatic influence linking North America and Asia.”
