Thumbnail: Airstrikes and retaliation repeat… The Middle East remains on edge ===== Headline ====== U.S. forces carried out airstrikes against Iranian military facilities after negotiations to end hostilities with Tehran stalled. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said on June 1 on X (formerly Twitter) that it conducted self-defense strikes over the weekend against Iranian radar and drone-control facilities on Goruk and Qeshm islands. CENTCOM described the operations as “a deliberate and measured response” to Iranian aggressive actions, including the downing of a U.S. drone operating over international waters. The strikes occurred on May 30–31. CENTCOM added that the strikes quickly neutralized two Iranian suicide drones that posed a clear threat to ships near the Strait of Hormuz, along with air-defense systems and a ground control station. Iran immediately vowed retaliation. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) told state television it struck the air base it identified as the origin of the U.S. attack, saying the move was in response to a recent U.S. strike on a communications tower on Sirik Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts said the IRGC’s retaliation appeared to target a U.S. Air Force base in Kuwait.
