While President Donald Trump was traveling to Beijing for a U.S.-China summit, Taiwan conducted a large live-fire exercise on a frontline island facing the Chinese mainland using U.S.-made weapons. United Daily News reported that the Kinmen Defense Command launched the drill in the early hours of the 13th along Kinmen’s coastline, simulating an amphibious landing by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The exercise brought together artillery, tanks, armored vehicles and anti-tank systems to establish overlapping fields of fire along the shoreline aimed at stopping an amphibious assault. In a notable first, troops on Kinmen fired two U.S.-made Javelin anti-tank missiles live. United Daily News quoted Taiwan’s military as saying the Javelins were used to strike enemy landing infantry and armored targets at sea and to provide cover for armored units advancing onto a beachhead. In the later phase, M60A3 tanks and CM21 armored vehicles were committed to the beachhead to simulate repelling an attempted landing. Taiwan’s military said the drill was conducted with realistic personnel, equipment, timing, locations and scenarios, and that it prioritized testing command procedures and communications across multiple units. The exercise drew added attention because it coincided with President Trump’s three-day state visit to Beijing. #Taiwan #China #LiveFireDrill #USChinaSummitFor Yonhap News TV tips and inquiries: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23, Lee Ji-yoon (easyun@yna.co.kr)
