Ferrari Luce: The Groundbreaking EV Redefining Supercar Luxury by Jonathan Ive

Daniel Kim Views

Jonathan Ive, the mastermind behind Apple’s golden era and the iPhone’s iconic identity, has just unleashed a seismic shock in the automotive world.

After five years of clandestine collaboration with legendary supercar maker Ferrari, Ive has finally pulled back the curtain on the interior of their first all-electric creation: the Ferrari Luce.

This groundbreaking project, a joint effort between Ive’s design firm LoveFrom and Ferrari, marks the first stage of a three-phase reveal, with only the interior and interface currently on display.

Surprisingly, the Luce’s interior philosophy centers on elegant simplicity rather than ostentatious gadgetry.

Ive, who spearheaded the smartphone revolution, has eschewed touchscreens in favor of precision-milled aluminum buttons and aircraft-inspired toggle switches.

This modern interpretation of the Bauhaus “form follows function” principle stands in stark contrast to the trend of oversized screens dominating luxury car interiors, making such designs seem instantly outdated.

The material choices for the cabin border on obsessive.

Not a trace of cheap plastic can be found; instead, every component is crafted from 100% recycled, anodized aluminum alloy.
In an industry first, the key fob features E Ink technology, changing its logo color when docked in the center console to signal the car’s readiness – a detail that exemplifies the project’s fanatical attention to minutiae.

The fusion of iPhone-like precision with supercar aesthetics creates an interior that’s more akin to a sculptural masterpiece than a vehicle cabin.

The technical achievements are equally impressive.

An ultra-thin OLED dashboard, developed in partnership with Samsung Display, features real moving analog needles – a blend of cutting-edge tech and classic design.

This harmonious mix of innovation and nostalgia, epitomized by the Nardi-inspired three-spoke steering wheel, reinforces the Luce as a work of art on wheels.

While the Luce’s exterior remains under wraps until May, its powertrain is rumored to deliver over 1,000 horsepower.

Online reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with enthusiasts hailing it as “the realization of the Apple car dream” and praising its elegance compared to screen-dominated EVs.

Despite an expected price tag in the billions of KRW (tens of millions of USD), Ferrari is reportedly inundated with inquiries from affluent buyers worldwide eager to own Ive’s automotive masterpiece.

The collaboration’s impact is so significant that even some of the world’s wealthiest individuals are anxious about securing an allocation, as this project rewrites the rulebook of automotive design.

Editor’s Take: The Ferrari Luce, crafted by the father of the touchscreen who ironically abandoned touch interfaces, emerges as the most refined yet audacious answer to the electric vehicle industry’s current identity crisis.
