The Automotive Safety Research Institute of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (KATRI) unveiled its in-house accident-analysis software to the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency’s Traffic Crime Investigation Division for the first time on the 13th, saying the move strengthens cooperation to build a scientific accident-investigation system.

Built from KATRI’s crash-investigation experience, the program synchronizes diverse data—crash video, audio, and vehicle driving records—on a shared timeline so investigators can analyze incidents dynamically and in three dimensions.

Crash probes must combine multiple data sources that use different recording formats and timestamps. KATRI says the program lets investigators analyze those datasets together, making crash scenes easier to interpret and enabling more precise reconstructions.

The software also improves video quality and includes analysis tools that clarify the sequence of events and vehicle movements, helping to identify causes and boost investigative efficiency.

KATRI developed the accident-analysis program in 2020 based on its crash-analysis work and completed patent registration for the related technology in 2023. Last year, it upgraded the tool’s capabilities for analyzing video, audio and vehicle-record data to support finer-grained crash analysis.

To introduce its scientific analysis techniques and strengthen cooperative investigation efforts, KATRI invited officials from the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency’s Traffic Crime Investigation Division to a crash-investigation training session on the 6th. The institute shared case studies and analysis methods and demonstrated how to use the accident-analysis software.

KATRI plans to publish a user manual and training program for the software in the first half of this year to support rapid, science-based investigations of various crash types. In the second half, it will distribute the software free to public agencies, including police departments that request it, and provide training on analysis methods.

Jung Yong-sik, president of the Korea Transportation Safety Authority, said, “We will continue refining our crash-analysis technology and expanding cooperation with partner agencies to lead efforts to build a more scientific and reliable accident-investigation system.”
