Porsche is reportedly weighing a plan to consolidate the electric Taycan and the internal-combustion Panamera into a single model — a prospect that has taken many car enthusiasts by surprise.

When the industry pivoted toward electrification, Porsche answered with the Taycan. Now, with the EV market rapidly evolving, the company appears to be reassessing its lineup and overall strategy.

One Name, Two Powertrains

The Panamera and Taycan have built reputations as flagship sports sedans in the combustion-engine and electric segments, respectively. Yet observers note growing overlap between the two in terms of size and market positioning.

British outlet Autocar and others say Porsche is studying a consolidation of the two models. If it proceeds, insiders expect Porsche would market the car under a single name while offering both internal-combustion and electric powertrains across the lineup.

For context, Porsche’s Cayenne was originally developed as a combustion SUV but today is offered with multiple powertrain options, including electrified variants.

Analysts believe a Panamera–Taycan merger would likely follow a similar path: a single model name with both combustion and electric powertrain choices available to buyers.

Porsche Chooses Development Efficiency

Porsche’s interest in consolidation appears driven by a push for more efficient vehicle development. The Panamera is built on a combustion-based platform and has expanded into hybrid variants, while the Taycan rides on a dedicated electric vehicle architecture.

Moving both models onto a shared architecture could shorten development timelines, increase parts commonality, lower design costs and trim marketing spend.

Some observers also point out that buyers often distinguish the Panamera and Taycan mainly by their powertrains, not by significant differences in size or packaging. That perception makes a single-name strategy more attractive from a branding perspective.

Falling Sales Also Play a Role

Declining sales are also a factor. In Porsche’s recently released 2025 global results, Taycan volume fell 22% year over year to 16,339 units.

The Panamera fared better but still slipped 6% to 27,701 units year over year.

Compounding the issue, combined sales of the two models in China — one of Porsche’s key markets — dropped about 26%. Porsche says it has not made any final decision.

Industry insiders say Porsche is likely to consider trimming or reshaping parts of its lineup to improve profitability and engineering efficiency.
