Hyundai Motor Group is intensifying its push into next‑generation mobility by deepening a strategic partnership with NVIDIA across autonomous driving and software‑defined vehicle (SDV) development. The automaker plans to pair autonomous platforms with artificial intelligence to modernize vehicle software architecture and, over the medium to long term, expand collaboration into robo‑taxis. After a string of meetings between Chairman Chung Eui‑sun and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, industry observers say Hyundai has reorganized its autonomous‑driving teams and is teaming up with global tech players to close the technology gap in future mobility.

On March 17, Hyundai and Kia said they will start jointly developing next‑generation autonomous driving solutions that combine their SDV capabilities with NVIDIA’s autonomous driving stack. A Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson described the move as a strategic decision to accelerate the internalization of autonomous driving technology. At the GTC 2026 conference in Silicon Valley, CEO Huang said, “Many new partners have joined the robo‑taxi effort,” citing Hyundai, BYD, Nissan and Geely among the participants.

Hyundai and Kia will adopt NVIDIA’s DRIVE Hyperion platform to create an integrated architecture scalable from Level 2 to Level 4. Hyperion packages high‑performance CPUs and GPUs together with sensors and cameras into a standardized hardware reference design essential for autonomy. Hyundai Motor Group plans to build an SDV architecture on top of that platform that incorporates its extensive vehicle development experience.

Over the medium to long term, the partners intend to extend cooperation to Level 4 robo‑taxis. Motional, the U.S.‑based autonomous driving joint venture, will serve as the focal point for comprehensive technical discussions to advance robo‑taxi capabilities and bolster competitiveness across both technology and services. Motional is preparing to commercialize an Ioniq 5–based unmanned robo‑taxi service in Las Vegas by year‑end.

Hyundai Motor Group also plans to establish a closed‑loop data pipeline that feeds vehicle‑collected data into AI training and then applies those models back to improve vehicle performance. Industry analysts have flagged the potential introduction of NVIDIA’s autonomous driving AI model, AlphaMayo. An official at the Korea Automotive Research Institute said, “AlphaMayo could lower the cost and technical barriers to autonomy and has the potential to reshape the industry landscape.”

Internally, Hyundai has reshaped its autonomous driving strategy. This year, the company tapped Park Min‑woo, a former NVIDIA executive, as head of the Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) division and CEO of 42dot to lead the group’s autonomous strategy. In a recent town hall, Park stressed that innovation will come when AVP, 42dot and other teams across the group collaborate closely.

The expanded collaboration also reflects a strengthened working relationship between Chairman Chung and CEO Huang. The two met informally at a chicken restaurant in Korea last October and again at CES 2026 to discuss autonomy cooperation, continuing their talks into this year. Industry insiders expect the partnership to bolster competitiveness in SDV and autonomous driving platforms.

Kim Heung‑soo, vice president of Hyundai Motor Group’s Global Strategy Organization (GSO), said, “Expanding our partnership with NVIDIA will create critical momentum to deliver safe, reliable autonomous driving technology. With one‑team cooperation across the group, we will build differentiated capabilities from Level 2 driver‑assist systems through Level 4 robo‑taxi services.”
