Next-generation jets aimed at easing fuel-cost pressure
Jeju Air (089590) said on the 23rd that it had taken delivery of its 10th B737-8 next-generation aircraft on the 20th.
Jeju Air had planned to add seven B737-8s this year; the 10th aircraft is the second of those seven.
The carrier began modernizing its fleet in 2023 by introducing two B737-8s. Last year it added six more next-generation jets and returned two leased aircraft that had exceeded 20 years of service.
Jeju Air now operates 44 passenger aircraft, including 10 next-generation planes. The airline says the newer, more fuel-efficient jets have eased fuel-cost pressure and helped improve profitability. After five consecutive quarters of losses beginning in the third quarter of 2024, the carrier returned to profit in the fourth quarter of 2025. Fuel expenses in 2025 were about 16% lower than in 2024.
A Jeju Air spokesperson said, “To respond to growing uncertainty from oil-price and exchange-rate volatility, market restructuring and intensifying competition, we are prioritizing disciplined, performance-focused management this year.” He added, “We will introduce seven next-generation aircraft while retiring older planes to strengthen profitability and financial resilience rather than expand scale. We also plan to increase investment in safety-management systems and core flight infrastructure to rebuild trust.”
