The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said on March 26 that Minister Kim Yoon-deok met with Ugo Astuto, the European Union’s ambassador to South Korea, to discuss expanding cooperation across the transport sector — including automotive, aviation, research and development (R&D), and a green partnership.

Both sides agreed to use the 3rd Korea‑EU High‑Level Transport Cooperation Meeting, scheduled for May in Seoul, as a platform to deepen policy exchanges and to identify joint projects in sustainable and low‑emission mobility.

The ministry and the EU have maintained policy dialogue on global priorities such as carbon reduction and digital transformation and have built practical cooperation through initiatives like the Aviation Partnership Project on aviation safety and traffic management. Domestic research institutes have recently begun participating in Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation program, signaling growing R&D collaboration.

The EU delegation stressed its intent to strengthen collaboration with South Korea in both the automotive and aviation sectors and expressed hope that cooperation will broaden beyond aviation safety into environmental and future mobility areas. It urged closer ties through continued policy dialogue, joint research, and expert exchanges.

“We are nurturing the future mobility industry centered on commercializing autonomous vehicles,” Minister Kim said. “Korea‑EU cooperation on vehicle safety standards and autonomous driving technologies can help secure global competitiveness.”

He pointed to achievements in aviation safety cooperation and pledged to expand work on green aviation, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). Kim also said R&D cooperation should extend into decarbonized future mobility fields — following urban innovation and green buildings — to include autonomous driving and carbon‑neutral road transport.

Both sides agreed to broaden cooperation across autonomous driving, future mobility, R&D, and related areas to deliver tangible results.
