Seongpa District in Seoul has been offering regular bicycle classes for residents to encourage everyday cycling.

Each course fills on a first-come, first-served basis and has evolved into a program shaped by community demand.

Last year, every participant in the resident bicycle safety classes reported being satisfied, and about 96% of attendees gave positive ratings to the bicycle repair workshops. Officials say those results confirm the programs’ effectiveness and reflect steady interest in bike education.

This year the district will again offer Bicycle Safety Education and Bicycle Repair Experience courses to promote cycling and build a safety-conscious culture. Riding and maintenance classes are held separately to cover both use and upkeep.

The Bicycle Safety Education course, aimed at beginners, pairs classroom lessons on traffic rules and riding techniques with outdoor practice. It covers protective gear, brake handling and on-bike drills. Each offering runs two hours a day across three days; the district will hold three sessions from late April through mid-May at the Songpa Safety Experience Training Center, with up to 12 participants per session.

The Bicycle Repair Experience course teaches participants to resolve common everyday problems themselves. Attendees learn bicycle structure and tool use, then practice basic maintenance such as patching flats, adjusting brakes and gears, and addressing chain derailments. The 1 hour 20 minute course will be held five times in May at the Bicycle Repair Experience Center, in small, hands-on groups of three people per session. The district plans to offer the course again in the second half of the year.

To register, search “bicycle” on the Songparun website and select your desired course. You can view schedules and course details there; enrollment is first-come, first-served.

In addition, the district provides on-site bicycle safety classes for daycare centers and kindergartens, and it offers electric-scooter safety training for middle and high school students.
