"Unification is a Survival Strategy": Gwangju-Jeonnam Integration Offers Model for Balanced National Development

Democratic Party of Korea’s Rep. Lee Gae-ho (Damyang, Hampyeong, Yeonggwang, Jangseong) has officially declared his candidacy for the inaugural mayoral position of the Gwangju-Jeonnam integrated administrative body. His platform focuses on overcoming regional decline and establishing a pivotal hub in South Korea’s southern region.

In press conferences held at the Jeonnam Provincial Council and Gwangju City Council on January 10, Lee asserted, “The integration of Gwangju and Jeonnam is no longer optional; it’s crucial for our region’s survival.” He pledged to “usher in an era of a ‘Southern Capital,’ presenting a new paradigm for balanced national development driven by local initiative.”

Addressing the challenges facing the Honam region, Lee stated, “Gwangju’s economic growth has plateaued, while Jeonnam faces existential threats due to rapid aging and population decline.” He emphasized that “without synergizing Gwangju’s innovative capacity and Jeonnam’s latent potential, we cannot hope to counterbalance the concentration of resources in the Seoul metropolitan area.”

Lee emphasized that the administrative merger should prioritize “enhancing quality of life” rather than mere expansion. “Our unified city must evolve into a thriving community where residents enjoy improved living standards, not just a larger urban sprawl,” he said. “We aim to build a southern regional hub capable of rivaling Seoul.”

Positioning himself as a well-prepared leader for the unified city, Lee highlighted his extensive background in public service and politics. A former civil service exam passer, he boasts over three decades of experience in Jeonnam’s local government and central ministries. Lee also underscored his four terms as a National Assembly member, including roles as Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and in key party leadership positions.

Lee also emphasized his potential for effective collaboration with the current administration, noting, “I’ve worked closely with President Lee Jae-myung in formulating national policies.” He committed to leveraging his political acumen to secure essential funding and authority for the new unified city.

“Spearheading the grand unification of Gwangju and Jeonnam and catalyzing major transformation will be my ultimate political mission,” Lee declared, appealing for public support and vowing to dedicate his full efforts to the region’s future prosperity.
