The People Power Party’s Gwangju City Committee unveiled its campaign promises for the upcoming June 3 local elections, including plans to attract Costco Wholesale Corporation and construct a cable car on Mudeungsan Mountain.
The committee held a press conference in the city council briefing room on the afternoon of the 10th to announce its five major policy initiatives for the local elections.
The committee’s five key policy initiatives are: 1) creating a business-friendly environment for large corporations, 2) implementing a regional development model that prioritizes Gwangju, 3) transforming Gwangju into a cultural and artistic hub that attracts visitors, 4) making Gwangju a city where young people want to return, and 5) fostering a community that supports socially vulnerable groups, including women.
To boost the economy and create jobs for young people, the committee proposed several measures: 1) prioritizing the abolition of inheritance tax in Gwangju and Jeonnam while increasing job opportunities at large corporations, 2) expanding high-paying job opportunities for youth at major companies through contracts offering annual salaries over 100 million KRW (75,000 USD), 3) eliminating income tax and reducing value-added tax to adapt to the era of automation, 4) establishing a Gwangju-style Silicon Valley, 5) creating a national AI semiconductor computing center, and 6) addressing the rising vacancy rates in commercial spaces around Chungjangno.
The committee’s cultural, artistic, and tourism proposals include: 1) installing a cable car and monorail on Mudeungsan Mountain, 2) introducing international flights at Gwangju Airport, 3) developing a baseball-themed commercial district around Champions Field, 4) attracting Costco Wholesale Corporation, 5) establishing a Gwangju branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and 6) constructing a K-pop arena.
To support socially vulnerable groups, including women, the committee proposed: 1) strengthening monitoring of accessibility facilities for people with disabilities, 2) creating healing and communication spaces for individuals with disabilities, 3) implementing a deferred payment system for medical services for people with disabilities, 4) providing phased financial support of up to 100 million KRW (75,000 USD) for childbirth, 5) establishing an AI education center for women, and 6) launching a campaign to encourage the transfer of parking spaces to working youth.
The committee stated, “Seven months have passed since the Lee Jae-myung administration took office, but the people’s living conditions have not improved. The People Power Party’s Gwangju City Committee has been developing policies to establish itself as a viable alternative party in the Honam region and to create a prosperous Gwangju. We hope that the Democratic Party and other political parties will review our policies and initiate substantive discussions to implement any necessary pledges.”
