President Lee Jae-myung underscored the critical role of legislation in addressing South Korea’s challenges amid a rapidly evolving global landscape. On February 10, he asserted that legislative support is crucial for bolstering national competitiveness, particularly in areas such as international trade negotiations and regulatory reform. Lee expressed concern that the current pace of legislative action is insufficient to effectively respond to global shifts. He emphasized the urgent need for institutional measures in light of increasing international instability and intensifying competition between nations.

During the fifth Cabinet meeting at the Blue House that morning, President Lee specifically addressed recent domestic and international developments. While acknowledging his previous restraint in commenting on National Assembly matters, he explained that raising these issues has become imperative given the current circumstances.

Lee pointed out that South Korea’s present situation markedly differs from past norms. He urged recognition of the heightened global instability and the intensification of inter-state competition that is now challenging established world orders.

The President stressed the paramount importance of swift domestic political and administrative responses in this new environment. He noted that technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence, have far outpaced previous projections. Lee warned that failing to adapt quickly to these changes could directly undermine national competitiveness. He explained that regardless of internal efforts, South Korea must outpace other nations to avoid falling behind in the global arena.

President Lee emphasized the necessity for domestic unity and reform initiatives. He asserted that in the current global context, collective action should take precedence over internal disputes. Lee called on politicians, as public servants entrusted with the people’s sovereignty, to prioritize national interests above party lines. He underscored the need for bipartisan cooperation, especially on matters of foreign policy.

Addressing the government’s role, Lee stated that to advance critical legislative priorities, the administration must engage in more assertive advocacy with the National Assembly. He stressed that beyond mere requests, officials should, if necessary, conduct on-site visits to explain and seek cooperation. This approach, he explained, is crucial to minimizing societal costs resulting from legislative delays.

President Lee also recalled his previous remarks to a former labor minister, reiterating the gravity of legislative delays. He insisted that the ongoing threats to public safety and well-being demand immediate improvements in the legislative process.

Lee affirmed his readiness to take direct action if needed to expedite legislative progress. He added that this sense of urgency should permeate all government departments, not just specific agencies.

This statement is interpreted as a dual call for governmental commitment to legislative action and political cooperation in response to shifting global dynamics. All eyes will be on how the administration and the National Assembly collaborate on key legislative initiatives, focusing on both speed and approach.
