Kim Chang-gyu (67), the mayor of Jecheon and a member of the People Power Party, will formally enter the June 3 local elections on the 20th.

In a phone interview with News1 on the 19th, Mayor Kim said he plans to file his preliminary candidate registration with the Jecheon City Election Commission at about 10 a.m. on the 20th. He will then change into a red jacket symbolic of the People Power Party and officially launch his campaign.

Mayor Kim said he visited city departments and affiliated agencies on the 19th to thank staff for their efforts, telling them, “Thank you for your hard work,” and expressing sincere appreciation for the public servants who worked with him over the past four years. He added that, if reelected, he intends to return to continue projects left unfinished.

After registering as a preliminary candidate, his first scheduled stop is to pay respects at the Chunghon Tower and then meet vendors at Naeto Market.

His campaign office is located on the second floor of a building at the KB Kookmin Bank intersection on Central-ro in Jecheon. He plans to hold an opening ceremony and launch event there soon.

Within the People Power Party, the race is shaping into a four-way contest that includes Mayor Kim, who has formalized his re-election bid; Lee Jae-woo (50), former director of major project management at the Ministry of Economy and Finance; Lee Chung-hyung (59), a spokesperson for the party’s central committee; and Lee Chan-gu (62), chairman of the Jecheon Development Committee.

On the Democratic Party side, former Jecheon Mayor Lee Sang-cheon (64) and former Jecheon–Danyang chair Jeon Won-pyo (59) have completed their preliminary registrations, setting the stage for a likely head-to-head contest between the two.
