Buckingham Palace announced on the 31st (local time) that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will make a state visit to the United States at the end of April.

Buckingham Palace said the visit follows the advice of the British government and an invitation from U.S. President Donald Trump. The palace added that the visit will mark the 250th anniversary of American independence and celebrate the shared history and contemporary ties between the two countries.

The official announcement is being read as an effort by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government to signal that there are no ruptures in its relationship with the Trump administration.

On the same day, President Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, “Melania and I are pleased to announce that Their Majesties the King and Queen of the United Kingdom will visit the United States for a historic state visit from April 27 to 30. The visit will include a beautiful state dinner at the White House on the evening of April 28.”

This will be Charles III’s first state visit to the United States.

Media outlets had long reported that Charles planned to travel to the U.S. at President Trump’s invitation, but Buckingham Palace had not officially confirmed the trip until now.

Earlier this year, tensions over issues including Greenland and developments involving Iran, together with President Trump’s frequent criticism of the U.K., prompted some to call for the visit to be postponed or canceled.

Buckingham Palace only announced the visit would take place in late April and did not release exact dates or a detailed schedule.
