2026 Local Elections: The Three Paths for Joo Ho-young Revealed!

After the party’s candidate selection committee announced it would hold a six-person primary for Daegu mayor excluding Joo Ho-young and Lee Jin-sook, former People Power Party (PPP) floor leader Kim Sung-tae suggested that Joo might run as an independent.

On the 3rd, Kim appeared on CBS Radio’s Park Jae-hong’s One Match and said the court’s dismissal of Joo Ho-young’s injunction, given how dynamic the situation is, effectively means there will be no substantive change. By making that ruling, one of the levers that could have dramatically shaken up the June 3 election has been removed, he said.

Kim outlined three options for Joo: first, run as an independent; second, vacate his district to ally with Han Dong-hoon and spearhead a conservative rebuilding effort; or third, step back from the race, serve humbly in the Daegu mayoral campaign headquarters, and use his stature as a six-term lawmaker to act as a senior conservative elder. Those, Kim said, are Joo’s only options.

Predicting Joo’s response, Kim said that given his temperament, he expects Joo to cause a stir. He added that Joo is more likely to challenge the party’s committee operations and decisions than to pursue an alliance with Han. From the perspective of the pro-government bloc, the Daegu mayoral race will become more interesting, Kim said. Speaking on the assumption that Joo will run, Kim also said he believes Joo is highly likely to consider an independent bid.
