On the 5th, the Democratic Party’s Jeonnam provincial election committee announced it will reduce the Gwangyang mayoral primary for the June 3 local elections from a three-candidate field to a two-candidate contest.
The party’s Supreme Council said it found serious problems with candidate Park Seong-hyun’s eligibility and recommended that the provincial committee take strong measures, including disqualifying him from the primary.
Following that recommendation, the Jeonnam provincial committee will proceed with the Gwangyang mayoral primary as a head-to-head contest between Kim Tae-gyun and Jung In-hwa, excluding Park Seong-hyun.
The committee cited allegations that Park operated an illegal campaign phone chat room and offered money.
Earlier, the Jeonnam Provincial Election Commission referred 15 people — including prospective local government heads and campaign operatives — to the police on charges that they ran an illicit phone chat room for primary campaigning and attempted to provide money to campaign workers.
A provincial party official said the Gwangyang mayoral selection will proceed as a two-person primary and that the overall schedule will remain unchanged.
The Democratic Party’s Jeonnam committee will hold first-round primaries for 11 city and county chief races — Mokpo, Yeosu, Gwangyang, Naju, Damyang, Jangheung, Gangjin, Wando, Jindo, Yeongam and Muan — over two days, the 6th and 7th. Vote counting is scheduled for 10 a.m. on the 8th in the party’s meeting room. After a review of the primary results on the 10th, the final round and any runoff are planned for the 11th.
