“Arbaeen” marks the 40th day following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, revered by Shia Muslims as the third imam, who was killed at the Battle of Karbala by forces aligned with a Sunni dynasty.
For Shia Muslims, Arbaeen is not merely a day of mourning; it is a time to reaffirm Imam Hussein’s spirit of steadfast resistance and to pledge to carry on his cause.
Iranian authorities appear to have used the nationwide Arbaeen observances to equate Khamenei’s death with Imam Hussein’s martyrdom, to heighten anti-U.S. and anti-Israel sentiment, and to galvanize a determination to resist.
President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior officials marched alongside citizens, and leaders from across society delivered eulogies urging people to uphold Khamenei’s legacy of resistance.
Video broadcast by Iranian outlets showed crowds dressed in black carrying Iranian flags, Hezbollah banners and photos of Ayatollah Khamenei, chanting slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”
Observers are watching whether Khamenei’s designated successor and son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei—who has so far issued only written statements—will appear in public or deliver a spoken address.
Mojtaba had not appeared by late afternoon.
