Around 9:30 a.m., near Jeonju Sinhung High School in North Jeolla Province, participants chanted \”Long live Korean independence\” to commemorate the March 13, 1919 Jeonju Manse Movement.
The Jeonju March 13 Manse Movement, which took place 107 years ago, involved more than 10,000 people and was the largest independence demonstration in North Jeolla Province. Pastor Kim In-jeon of Seomun Church and students from Sinhung and Gijeon schools led a large protest at the Jeonju Southern Market.
About 500 students and citizens dressed in white robes marched while waving the Taegeukgi, South Korea’s national flag, and shouting \”Manse.\” Passersby stopped to record the scene on their phones and to reflect on the day’s historical significance.
Seventeen-year-old Jo Seon-ha, a student at Gijeon Girls’ High School who carried a Taegeukgi while wearing her school uniform, said she wanted to take part to relive the spirit of the Manse movement. \”Every March, Sinhung Middle and High Schools and Gijeon Girls’ High reenact the event. It’s more meaningful because ordinary citizens join in,\” she said.
