On the 15th, the 94th-anniversary commemoration of the Jeju haenyeo anti-Japanese resistance movement was held at the outdoor Haenyeo Plaza of the Haenyeo Museum in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City. The event has been organized in past years by the Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Memorial Project Association, but this year Jeju Province assumed responsibility for the first time.

Under the slogan \”Remember the Waves of That Day,\” about 500 people attended, including Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon, Provincial Council Chair Lee Sang-bong, Superintendent of Education Kim Kwang-soo, National Assembly members Kim Han-gyu and Wi Seong-gon, independence movement veterans, and haenyeo.

Relatives of Bu Chun-hwa and Bu Deok-ryang, haenyeo who led the resistance, and the family of Kang Gwan-soon—who penned lyrics for haenyeo protest songs and took part in the movement—were also present.

The program began with the national ceremony and proceeded with a commemorative video, readings of letters from the families of independence patriots, the governor’s commemorative address, a performance, and concluded with three cheers of \”manse.\”

The commemorative video employed artificial intelligence to recreate historical scenes from the resistance, underscoring how the haenyeo’s courage and solidarity are preserved in today’s collective memory. In the performance, fusion gugak group Yeorak and pop-jazz singer Ari arranged the melody of \”Hollo Arirang\” with lyrics in the Jeju dialect to celebrate the haenyeo’s solidarity and spirit of resistance.

Go Un-su, a relative of Bu Chun-hwa, a recipient of the Order of National Foundation, said, \”I know the courage they showed in the face of fear and pain. I will not forget the resolute spirit that endured under life’s burdens and the mutual support that sustained them.\”

Prior to the commemoration, the Jeju Haenyeo Anti-Japanese Memorial Project Association hosted a memorial service, a street procession, and an awards ceremony for haenyeo, offering a moment to honor and remember their profound sacrifice.
