Jincheon County in North Chungcheong Province announced on the 16th that it had designated Saenggok Village in Yongjeong-ri, Chopyeong-myeon, as a dementia-safe village.
A \”dementia-safe village\” is a dementia-friendly community designed to let people with dementia, their families and neighbors live safely and without fear.
The designation is based on a comprehensive assessment of six criteria: the number of elderly residents; access to a dementia care center; community demand and engagement; potential for program expansion; diversity of resource investment; and the number of residents living with dementia.
Once a village receives the designation, county officials provide a range of services and programs, including mobile early dementia screenings, dementia-prevention education, distribution of safety kits, and performances intended to improve dementia awareness.
In particular, when a resident is diagnosed with dementia, officials immediately connect them to integrated dementia-management services, offering seamless support such as assistance with treatment costs, provision of care supplies, and rehabilitation and caregiving services.
Shin Hee-sang, an official in the county’s Health Promotion Division, said, \”The goal of a dementia-safe village is to build a tightly woven safety net so seniors can spend their later years happily in the communities they love, without fear of dementia. We will work to make Jincheon County a place where all residents warmly embrace people living with dementia.\”
