A man in his 70s has been taken into custody after allegedly attacking an acquaintance with a knife when she refused to meet him.

The Northern Gwangju Police Station booked the 70-year-old, identified as A, on April 11 on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police say A attacked 60-year-old B with a knife at a restaurant in the Gak-hwa-dong neighborhood of Buk-gu, Gwangju, at about 9 a.m. that morning.

B was taken to a hospital and is receiving treatment; authorities say her injuries are not life-threatening.

According to investigators, A and B had previously known each other. When B stopped answering his calls and declined to meet him, A threatened her. After she reported those threats to police, he allegedly carried out the attack in retaliation.

A surrendered to police after the incident, but before officers could formally arrest him he reportedly ingested poison and remains unconscious.

Police said they will conduct a full investigation into the circumstances once A regains consciousness.
