President Lee Jae-myung on June 2 urged officials to pay special attention after an explosion at a Hanwha Aerospace plant in Daejeon the previous day, calling repeated similar accidents at the same workplace a serious problem and asking that the matter be handled carefully.

At the Blue House Cabinet meeting that morning, the president said the blast at the Daejeon plant caused casualties, offered condolences to the families of those who died, and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He instructed the labor minister to identify workplaces where the same type of accident has recurred and to report back.

He also told relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause, draw up robust measures to prevent recurrence, and accelerate safety inspections at other similar facilities.

He added that although workplace deaths appear to be declining, it is regrettable that they still occur. People work to make a living and to build happy lives with their families, he said, yet workplaces meant to sustain life too often become sites of death.

The president also questioned whether our society truly respects human life — whether we value life over money and whether we respect others’ lives as we do our own. He noted that each individual life is its own universe and asked whether lives are treated equally.
