Team Korea’s bats come alive in WBC opener against Czech Republic
The South Korean national baseball team showcased their offensive firepower in their 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) debut. The game, held at Tokyo Dome in Japan, saw Korea face off against the Czech Republic in their first Pool C matchup.
Korea wasted no time asserting their dominance. In the bottom of the first inning, with one out and the bases loaded, Moon Bo-kyung launched a grand slam over the right-center field fence, giving his team an early 4-0 lead.
The offensive onslaught continued in the second inning. Park Dong-won’s double, followed by Kim Joo-won’s single, put runners in scoring position. Jones then drove in another run with a groundout to shortstop, extending Korea’s lead to 5-0.
The third inning saw no let-up from the Korean side. After Moon Bo-kyung grounded out to second to start the inning, Whitcomb stepped up to the plate. Working the count to 3-1, he crushed the fifth pitch from Czech reliever Bartos, sending it soaring over the left fielder’s head for a solo home run.
As the game entered the fourth inning, Korea held a commanding 6-0 lead, setting the stage for what could be a dominant performance in their WBC opener.
