Team Korea Makes a Statement with Early Grand Slam
The South Korean national baseball team set the tone early in their World Baseball Classic opener against the Czech Republic at the Tokyo Dome on March 5th.
Korea wasted no time asserting dominance. Leadoff hitter Kim Do-young worked a walk to start the bottom of the first. Tommy Edman, batting second, took an aggressive hack at Padisak’s first pitch but lined out to left. Lee Jung-hoo then singled to right, putting runners on the corners. Ahn Hyun-min’s walk loaded the bases with one out, setting the stage for a big moment.
Moon Bo-kyung stepped up to the plate and delivered in spectacular fashion. On a 2-1 count, Moon crushed Padisak’s fourth offering, sending it deep into the right-center field seats for a grand slam.
The early offensive explosion prompted the Czech Republic to pull starter Padisak in favor of reliever Jeff Barto.
After one inning of play, South Korea holds a commanding 4-0 lead.
