[Sports Today reporter Kang Taegu] Son Heung-min (LAFC) started in midfield but was unable to score in his first outing in that role.
LAFC defeated St. Louis 2-0 on March 15 (KST) at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles in Round 4 of the 2026 Major League Soccer season.
The victory extended LAFC’s perfect start to 4-0, with the team scoring eight goals and conceding none through the opening four matches.
Son, deployed as a central midfielder, played 72 minutes but did not register a goal or an assist.
Charged with driving the tempo and linking play, he created openings but came up short in decisive moments where his finishing typically shines.
In the 1st minute, Denis Bouanga broke in on goal after receiving Son’s pass and faced the goalkeeper one-on-one, but his shot sailed over the bar.
In the 15th minute, Son got on the end of a Bouanga pass and fired from inside the box, but the effort went wide.
Son again had a promising chance in the 56th minute (second-half 11th), but he struck the ball with too much force and failed to test the goalkeeper.
According to football statistics site FootMob, Son completed 100% of his passes (20/20) in 72 minutes, created one chance, lost possession twice, made one clearance, and won 60% of his duels (3/5).
FootMob awarded Son a solid 7.1 rating.
After a scoreless first half, LAFC broke through in the second period when Mathieu Choiniere’s long-range efforts found the net in the 73rd and 81st minutes (second-half 28th and 36th), sealing the win.
Meanwhile, St. Louis substitute Jeong Sang-bin came on in the 82nd minute, but Son had already been substituted earlier, so the expected Korean derby never materialized.
